A Study in Solid Ash

Seven chairs, drawn as architecture.

Each piece is carved from solid white ash — not veneered — its joints left legible so the chair confesses how it is made. One material, one restraint, resolved seven ways: three that draw a line around emptiness, three that close into shelter, and one that casts a form. Offered across five ash finishes.

I

The Open Frame

Drawing a line around emptiness — a low, open back that frames the room rather than filling it.

Ridgeline — solid-ash chair

Open Frame · 01

Ridgeline

A single line, drawn around emptiness.

A continuous gesture: the backrest lifts off the rear posts and becomes the arms in one unbroken beam that refuses to end. The lowest, most horizontal chair in the collection — the one that keeps a room's horizon unbroken. Grave and amber in black oak; dissolved into daylight in bleached ash.

Veranda — solid-ash chair

Open Frame · 02

Veranda

A room opened within the room.

The generous one. Broader in span and deeper in seat, it widens its arms the way a courtyard widens a house. Pale ash and a soft seat give it the temperament of morning light on plaster. It does not correct your posture; it grants ease — a chair scaled for lingering.

Facet — solid-ash chair

Open Frame · 03

Facet

Nothing extra. Nothing missing.

The tailored one. The tightest footprint of the open frames and the most disciplined line — every taper filed to a point, every joint a mitred confession. Walnut warms the grain to caramel; the seat sits in its frame like a stone set in a ring. Compact, poised, exact.

The Upholstered

The frame closes into shelter — a padded back inserted like a wall panel, a surface to fall into.

Alcove — solid-ash chair

Upholstered · 04

Alcove

The frame closes into shelter.

Here the open frame closes. A padded backrest floats between the posts like an inserted wall panel — the first to give the whole spine a surface to fall into. Taller and narrower in plan, more upright, more attentive. Smoked ash lends it dusk; the woven seat, a soft fog. The introvert of the collection.

Pilaster — solid-ash chair

Upholstered · 05

Pilaster

A small tower, standing to attention.

On a near-square base it rises to its full height — the most vertical proportion here. Upholstery held inside a blackened-oak cage, the seat glowing against the char like moss on burnt timber. Upright, compact, faintly formal: the piece you place where you want the eye to stop.

Colonnade — solid-ash chair

Upholstered · 06

Colonnade

Pure vertical lift.

A single ascending line from floor to shoulder. Without the visual weight of heavy arms, the silhouette becomes quiet altitude — softened by an upholstered back and seat in natural ash. The chair that lines a long table the way columns line a walk: rhythmic, upright, self-effacing, present.

III

The Monolith

Casting a form, not drawing a line — a solid, carved plane of ash that catches the light.

Standing Stone — solid-ash chair

Monolith · 07

Standing Stone

A form cast, not a line drawn.

The backrest is not a frame but a solid, curved wooden plane — a carved shoulder-blade of ash that catches light like a sail, or a menhir. The tallest and most sculptural of the seven; in black oak it burns quietly, charred wood and ember. Where every other chair draws a line, this one casts a mass. The collection's full stop.
