Materials Guide: Leather, Fabric, or Bouclé — How to Choose for SEA Climate
2026-05-01 · Areda Editorial
Choosing upholstery in a tropical climate is a different problem from choosing it in Milan. Humidity, UV, and air-conditioning cycles all stress materials in ways European specs don't always account for. Here is what we recommend.
Leather — the safest long-term choice
Full-grain Italian aniline leather ages well in SEA when kept out of direct sunlight and humidified slightly during dry season. It develops a patina; it does not "fail" in tropical climates as long as it is not in a sealed, hot, dry room.
Fabric — pick performance weaves
Look for outdoor-grade or contract-grade weaves: Sunbrella, Maharam, Kvadrat. They wash, resist UV, and recover from humidity cycles. Most Italian houses now offer these as configurable upgrades.
Bouclé — beautiful, demanding
Bouclé textures look incredible but pill in high-traffic settings. Reserve them for accent chairs, primary bedrooms, or formal living. Our team will steer you away from bouclé in dining or family-room positions.
Areda's recommendation
For first-time clients, we typically recommend a leather primary sofa and performance-weave dining chairs — a combination that survives the climate and a decade of use. Discuss your project with us and we will spec materials around your space and lifestyle.
